Mr. Tom Materman

An experienced Ophthalmic Surgeon, Mr. Materman has performed more than 5,000 procedures, including LASIK and LASEK, as well as cataract surgery. He is registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and is a fully trained Ophthalmologist who has undergone additional specialist training in refractive surgery.

He is a full time Ophthalmic Surgeon with Optical Express performing laser eye surgery and is an active member of various affiliated bodies and societies such as the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. Twice every year, Mr. Materman attends International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB) Conferences and is annually assessed by this board. The panel consists of several of the world's most eminent Refractive Surgeons including Mr. Steve Schallhorn, former Head of Ophthalmology for the US Navy, Professor Jan Venter, a world leading Ophthalmic Surgeon, and Mr. Jeffery Machat, co-founder of TLC Vision, one of the largest laser vision correction providers in the world.

In 2005 and 2006 he completed a 12 month fellowship working with Professor Jan Venter a world leading Ophthalmic Surgeon renowned for his work in the field of refractive surgery and phakic intraocular lens exchange. Originally from New Zealand Mr. Materman began his medical studies at the University of Auckland in 1983 and completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) in 1990. He went on to pass the primary Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists exams in 1996 and spent the following six months as a volunteer Doctor at the Tilganga Eye Centre in Kathmandu, Nepal working for the Fred Hollows Foundation. In 2003, he completed the RANZCO fellowship exams and accepted a fellowship post at the West of England Eye Unit in Exeter, before working with the Glaucoma Service at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.

Mr. Materman has made presentations in many different countries about laser surgery and regularly attends conferences about both laser vision correction and cataract surgery allowing him to stay abreast of all developments in the advancing field of ophthalmology.
