Miss Susanna Boytha

MD, MRCOphth

An experienced Ophthalmic Surgeon, Miss Boytha has performed more than 29,000 laser procedures including LASIK, LASEK, PRK and other advanced ocular operative techniques. She is registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and the Ireland Medical Council (IMC), and is a fully trained Ophthalmologist who has undergone additional specialist training in refractive surgery.

She is an Ophthalmic Surgeon for Optical Express who has gained vast experience in a wide range of specialities and is an active member of many international refractive surgical bodies and societies, such as the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Twice every year, Miss Boytha attends International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB) Conferences and is annually assessed by this board. The panel consists of several of the world’s most eminent refractive Surgeons including Mr. Steve Schallhorn, former Head of Ophthalmology for the US Navy, Professor Jan Venter, a world leading Ophthalmic Surgeon, and Mr. Jeffery Machat, co-founder of TLC Vision, one of the largest laser vision correction providers in the world.

Miss Boytha qualified as a Doctor of Medicine from the Semmelweis University of General Medicine in Budapest, Hungary in 1985 and progressed to gain her diploma as a Specialist in Ophthalmology which she was awarded by the Hungarian Board of Ophthalmology. She became a Certified Eye Bank Technician with the Eye Bank Association of America, San Diego, USA in 1993 and achieved further international standing in 1996 when she qualified as Doctor of Medicine at the University of Medicine and Surgery or Genova in Italy. In 2001 Miss Boytha became a Member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists gaining her MRCOphth.

Through her international experience and knowledge she established the first Eye Bank in Hungary and hold the post of Medical Director. The bank supplies the majority of Hungary with donor corneas and is a member of the European Eye Bank Association. Miss Boytha completed her fellowship in Cornea and Refractive surgery in the Corneoplastic Unit at the Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead in 1998. Miss Boytha held positions in the Ophthalmology Department of hospitals in Plymouth, Bristol and at the University Hospital of Wales. She specialised in refractive surgery and in 2001 became the Medical Director of a private laser eye clinic in Scotland.

Miss Boytha has lectured in many countries throughout Europe, America and India. She has undertaken the teaching of this specialist field internationally and her research and intensive training has led to the publication of numerous articles and papers. Miss Boytha has made many trips to countries such as Africa, Brazil, India, and Papua New Guinea where she has provided her services voluntarily to patients and also organised the 7th European Eye bank Conference in 1994 in Budapest, Hungary.
